Fencing is the
recreation sport of swordplay it is both a physical and mental workout. It was
discovered in the 19th century in Italy. It has three disciplines
(players) which have separate weapons and a separate set of rules each, the three
weapons are foil, sabre, and epee. A foil is a light weapon that targets the
torso but not the head and arms. A sabre targets the upper body, and an Epee targets
the whole body. Fencing takes place in a 1.5 meter by a long strip on the mat.
Lebogang Mguni, a
23-year jeweller venture said, “I started playing fencing in Reflilwe March
2015 and I played at ledwabane compressive high. My teacher is the one who
introduced me to fencing. I was playing the position of Eppe. It is different
from Sabre and foil because is a full-body contact sport.”
“Fencing kept me off
the streets of Refilwe the only disadvantage of fencing is you will never find
it in townships because the equipment is expensive, and it is not a popular
sport, and another thing is that everyone’s interest is mostly in soccer than
any other sports,” Mr. Mguni added.

Bontle Mokoena is a 2O-year-old
student from the Tshwane University of Technology currently studying Teaching
mentioned that she plays fencing at the main campus in Pretoria West. She found
out about fencing by watching Korean movies. The score is counted differently
whereby if you get the first fifteen points means you have won the game.
Bontle said that the
reason fencing is not popular in townships is that there is a lack of resources
and management also people do not know anything about the sport and when you do
not know something you do not have an interest.
Fencing should be
taught in townships for people to know so that they can participate in sports.
