Security company Fidelity ADT is warning Pretoria Motorists to be aware of hijacking.

This is after five vehicles were stolen on 14 October in Pretoria Central.

The vehicles that were stolen were four Hiluxs and one Fortuner, according to the security company.

Charnel Hattignh spokesperson of the company said most of the thefts happened at school sports events and at shopping centres.

“Criminals are aware shoppers have a car full of newly purchased items and are generally easy, distracted targets, we are seeing this happen anywhere, even when parked on the street”.

Hattingh said that criminals are also preying on the older members of the community because they are seen as vulnerable, soft targets.

She said, Pretoria Moot residents have reported to the company about a new modus operandi where elderly residents are targeted when out and about shopping.

“The suspects pickpocket them and take their car keys then proceed to steal their cars in the parking lot” Hattingh added.

Hattingh offers motorists and the elderly the following tips to avoid becoming victims of Hijacking:

-Motorists should always be aware of their surroundings - this applies to any public parking areas or even if you park on the road outside a property.

-Report any suspicious activity.

-Do not leave valuables in an unattended vehicle. If they have must ensure they are in the boot.

-Never push the remote locking device whilst walking away from the vehicle.

-Check that the vehicle is locked by testing the door.

-Ensure the boot is locked.

-Avoid shopping late at night.

-When in the mall or shopping centre, elders should carry as little as possible in their handbag or pockets and leave the unnecessary bank, and store cards and large amounts of cash at home.

- Never leave a handbag, purse, or wallet in a trolley.

- Elders should keep their wallet or purse in the front pocket of their jacket or trousers.

Hattingh urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious individuals to the mall security.
